The Art of Asking: What I Learned in Swedish Bookstores

Yesterday, I visited several bookstores in Skåne, Sweden. I started in Burlöv, then went to Lund, where I was mesmerised by the Lund Cathedral on a sunny Sunday. My last stop was in Löddeköpinge.

In one of the Akademibokhandeln stores, my book was placed on the same row as books by former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven, as well as one of Sweden’s most renowned architects, Gert Wingårdh. I learned a lot from visiting and speaking with the employees.

Steve Jobs once emphasised the importance of asking. Inspired by that, I introduced myself as an author, mentioned that my book is on the shelves and asked if there was a possibility to do an event with them. One said no, but most were open to it, either giving me their contact details or taking mine. Overall, it was a rewarding and unique Sunday.

Why is there so much resistance to asking?
